The first natives of the Rockford were by Native American cultures (i.e. the Hopewell, Mascouten, and Ottawa peoples). No archeological evidence of Native American settlements have been found in the Rogue River valley. Certain early settlers noted trails branching through the area.

Rockford Michigan (city proper) is about 10 miles north of Grand Rapids.
It is a beautiful downtown growing outward, but keeping a small town atmosphere. The best word to describe the city is Charming. Today the anchor business in the city is the Wolverine World Wide shoe maker.
The school district of Rockford is considered one of the best in Kent County Michigan. It is a place where families look to give their children a good education. Although the growing aspect has put pressure on its cultural openness, it still has a strong "family values" atmosphere.
